Aged Leads vs. Fresh Leads: When Each Wins in MCA

How to think about lead age, what conversion looks like across the age curve, and when a 90-day-old lead is more valuable than a fresh one.

The 'fresh leads always win' assumption is wrong as often as it's right. Lead age is one variable in a multi-variable equation that includes price, exclusivity, source quality, and your shop's call discipline.

Fresh leads (0–7 days)

Highest cost ($15–$60 per lead), highest intent, highest competition. The merchant is in active research mode. The shop that calls them in 10 minutes wins; the shop that calls in 2 hours often doesn't get the conversation.

Fresh leads make sense for shops that have the operational discipline to call within minutes and the budget to compete on price.

30-day aged leads

Cost drops to $4–$15 per lead. Intent has cooled but a meaningful percentage are still in the market — they took a partial offer, got declined elsewhere, or are circling back. Conversion drops 30–50% from fresh but cost-per-funded often comes out similar.

60–90 day aged

$1.50–$5 per lead. The pool is more diluted. The merchants who are still in the market at this age are often the harder deals — they got declined for credit reasons, they're shopping aggressively, or they took a stack and now need a consolidation.

These leads can be profitable for shops that work consolidation and second-position deals.

180+ days aged

Often nearly worthless without skip-tracing. Phone numbers go bad, emails change, the original event has passed. Some vendors still sell these as 'leads' — they're really just business contact data at that point.

The exclusivity multiplier

An exclusive fresh lead is worth 4–8x a shared one. A shared fresh lead sold to 12 shops simultaneously will produce a worse contact rate than a 30-day aged exclusive. Always ask vendors how many other shops have access.
